5 tips to designing eye catching posters
Below are my five main tips and things to think about when designing posters. The same principles can be used when designing a newsletter, website or anything else really……
-
Design with a purpose.
What is your poster for? Are you trying to change opinions? Inform? Recruit? Get people along to a meeting? Or is it simply to raise the profile of the union. Who is your audience and what do you want them to do. Without knowing this at the start your poster will fail.

-
Remember that simple is best.
Having content on the poster is very important but you need to keep it concise. Keep your message simple. Don’t be afraid of white space. Research shows that when there is less information on a page the viewer takes more in. Once you think you have designed your poster go back over it and remove everything that is not essential.

-
Use ideas not just pretty pictures.
Think about the posters you’ve seen recently, chances are the ones you remember had a hook and something clever about them. Using a play on words or jokes are popular but good posters are always based upon an idea.

-
Look around for inspiration.
Look at other posters What do you like and what do you not like? Find out what you like in posters and what you think works. Don’t copy but take notice of style and trends. Make note of what doesn’t work and steer clear of those things.

-
Use eye flow to your advantage.
Like books there is a method and pattern to the way we read pictures. And like books this changes depending on the culture you are from. Learn the what is standard in your culture and lead your viewers through the information on your poster.
